News

With discrete contracts and long-standing customers, news from Jack Richards & Son can seem a little slow by comparison with some of the ‘noisier’ companies in our industry. Traditionally, we don’t like to shout about our own achievements, preferring to keep our successes between ourselves and the customers who inspire us to achieve them. However, recent points of note are shown below for the sake of general information:

200 up for Jack Richards & Son

National haulier, Jack Richards & Son, has added the 200th truck to its fleet. The Daf XF 105.460 brings the total fleet number of tractors, trailers and rigids to 557. None of the Jack Richards’ trucks is more than three years old, and all are scrupulously maintained by the operator at its various depots around theUK.

Jack Richards, now aged 88, still works at the Fakenham headquarters every day of the week, while his son Anthony, chairman of the company, operates out of the company’s fast-growing Northwich depot. Jack started the business in June 1956, with a used 5t Bedford, bought for just £150 with a loan from his father.

Today’s business is very different. Where the early years were filled successfully with produce haulage from farms to wholesale market, the modern Jack Richards & Son operation is concerned with highly demanding work for food and drink, packaging, building products companies – in short, anything that suits the all-curtainside trailer fleet. The only deviation from this has been the take-up of a Palletways franchise in Norfolk, a venture the company has approached with its normal customer-focussed approach, backed with the latest technology.

Talking of the company’s growth over the years, Jack Richards said, “I’ve always offered customers a quality service and complete loyalty. If they’ve had a problem, we’ve tried to make it a shared problem and help however we could. If we’ve said we’re going to do something, then that’s what we’ll do. It’s a simple approach but we’ve only ever lost one customer...and we still work for them indirectly through the huge distribution company that took them on, so it must be working!”
